The first GTA 6 trailer has fetched over 219 million views since its release 11 months ago, and fans worldwide eagerly await the next one. Rockstar Games and easter eggs go hand in hand, and theories claiming the release date for trailer 2 has been already teased have unsurprisingly emerged.
The moon theory is fairly popular in the GTA community. It originated in September 2023 when Rockstar posted a promo image for GTA Online while wishing fans a happy moon festival. It was claimed that the moon phase in the post was a clever way to tease the launch of the first trailer.
Rockstar’s September 2023 post included a Waning Gibbous moon that appeared in real life on December 1, 2023, the day GTA 6’s trailer 1 was announced.
X user @GTAVI_Countdown highlighted Rockstar’s frequent usage of moons in promo images in a recent post. They also pointed out that the song used in the first trailer, Full Moon Fever, contains lyrics asking the listener to wait for the full moon.
Things become interesting, considering Rockstar Games’ GTA Online Community Update post from November 1, 2024, has a big moon as well, and the character in the image is replicating Jason’s pose from the first trailer’s promo image.
The r/GTA6 subreddit has also discussed the moon theory heavily under a post by user Fabrizerlo:
Before yall say Im loosing it, last year there was a moon phase theory and it ended up being correct

While a lot of fans are under the impression that the moon theory is a stretch, others are buying it because the previous one was a success. Interestingly, the next Gibbous moon falls on a Friday, the day Rockstar usually picks for announcements.

Amidst such claims, there are plenty who expect the developers to soon announce a delay in GTA 6’s launch. These rumors were fueled by a former Rockstar dev who simply predicted a delay based on Rockstar delaying GTA 4 four months before its original release date.
Although the former dev admitted to not having any insider information, his statements naturally spread like wildfire among fans who haven’t heard almost anything about the highly-anticipated title for months.
It’s hard to support or reject the GTA 6 trailer moon theory entirely, largely because GTA devs have a long history of hiding easter eggs in the most innovative ways. Only time will tell!
